You put up the free listing. Within about forty eight hours, the call came.
Someone extremely cheerful explaining that your listing is live but it’s showing on page three, and for a modest monthly amount they can move you up, and would you like to hear the packages.
Hold on to that call, because it explains more about Indian business directories than any SEO guide will. The listing is not the product. The listing is the hook, and the call is the product. Once you see that clearly, you can work out which part of this is actually search engine optimisation and which part is somebody else’s sales funnel.
Short answer on the SEO part. Citations still count, but less than almost everyone selling them implies. Around six listings are worth getting right rather than a hundred. Consistency matters more than count. And the phone number on the two largest Indian directories will never match the one on your website, by design, so stop trying to fix that and fix the things you can.
What the weighting actually says
The 2026 BrightLocal local search ranking factors work puts citation signals at roughly 7% of local pack ranking weight directly. Google Business Profile signals sit near 32%.
Four and a half times the weight. So if you were planning an afternoon of directory submissions, you have the allocation backwards and the afternoon belongs in your Business Profile instead, which I’ve written up as the Business Profile settings most businesses never touch.
The other finding worth having: low authority citations have been discounted further since around 2022, while consistency across the top couple of dozen sources has become the part that moves. BrightLocal’s 2025 work found 68% of local businesses carry at least one inconsistent listing, and that businesses with inconsistencies sat an average of 2.3 positions lower in local results.
Read that last number as correlation rather than proof. Businesses with messy listings tend to be businesses with messy everything. Still, it points the same way as the rest of it.
The six that matter in India
In rough order of how much I’d care.
Google Business Profile. Not a citation, the thing citations support. Everything else on this list exists to confirm what you have said here.
Justdial. Domain rating around 86 and reportedly over 130 million monthly visitors. For Indian local search this is the tier one directory and there is no close second.
Sulekha. Domain rating around 77, strongest in South India and the metros, and genuinely useful for home services, clinics and professional services.
IndiaMART. Domain rating around 87, so it carries real weight as a citation even though it is a B2B marketplace rather than a local directory. Worth being clear that its value as a citation and its value as a channel are two different questions, and I’ve argued the channel side separately in why overseas buyers never place you correctly.
Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Both free, both take ten minutes, and both get skipped. Apple matters more than its search share suggests, because Apple Maps is what Siri answers from and what a lot of iPhone users get when they tap an address.
TradeIndia if you are industrial or export facing. Otherwise skip it.
Below that, AskLaila and Grotal and the long tail of listing sites with domain ratings in the forties. They are volume, not priority. Getting all forty of them right is worth less than getting your address string right on the six above.
The phone number problem nobody warns you about
Here is the thing that breaks the standard advice when it meets Indian directories.
Justdial routes calls through its own numbers. Each listing gets a virtual number that forwards to you, which is how the platform knows a lead came from them and therefore how it bills for that lead. The number a customer sees is not your number.
That is not a bug and it is not something you can request an exception to. It is load bearing for their entire business model.
Which means perfect phone consistency across your citations is not available to you. The advice to make the P in NAP identical everywhere was written for a market where directories do not intermediate the call.
So here is how I would actually handle it.
Treat Justdial and IndiaMART as lead channels that happen to carry a citation, not as citations you can perfect.
Keep the phone number identical on the things you control: your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, your invoices and your WhatsApp Business profile. Accept the divergence on lead marketplaces. Then put all your consistency effort into the two fields that are genuinely yours, which are the name and the address.
Those two carry most of the matching weight anyway, and almost nobody gets them right.
The audit that actually finds the mess
Thirty minutes, and most of what you find will be old rather than wrong.
Search your exact business name in quotes. Then search your phone number as a query on its own. Then do both again with your previous phone number and your previous address, because the old address is the biggest single source of inconsistency in Indian local search. A business moves from Koramangala to HSR Layout, or Andheri West to Powai, updates Google, and leaves the old address sitting on fifteen sites for three years.
Then check your own name variants, which is the one that catches people. Pvt Ltd, Pvt. Ltd., Private Limited, and the version with “& Co” versus “and Co”. Pick one exact string and use it everywhere, including the full stops.
Same for the address. Indian addresses carry a landmark habit, the “opposite Forum Mall” or “near Metro station” line, and it gets typed differently on every site. Decide the exact string, including whether you write Floor or Flr, whether the building name comes before or after the street, and whether the landmark line exists at all. Then make every listing match that string character for character.
Check the PIN code is on all of them. It is missing more often than you would believe.
About those upsell calls
Be fair to the platforms here. The paid packages are lead products and some of them work.
Just judge them as lead products. Cost per enquiry against your actual close rate, measured over a quarter, the same way you would judge Google Ads. They buy you no ranking benefit, so any pitch that mixes “more leads” with “better Google ranking” is blending two things that should be priced separately.
And the one to decline without thinking about it: anyone offering a hundred citations for a few thousand rupees. That is selling you volume at the bottom of the authority range, which is precisely the part that has been discounted since 2022. You would be paying to add noise to the 7%.
Before lunch
Open a spreadsheet. Three columns: name, address, phone, exactly as you want them to appear forever.
Then fix Google Business Profile first, then Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART, then Bing and Apple. Six listings, one sitting.
If you’d like to think through your own listing situation, drop me a line on email, WhatsApp, phone or LinkedIn and we can have a quick chat, and my notes on SEO cover the rest of the local picture. I’m taking on a small number of contracts at the moment, so I’ll tell you straight whether it’s something I could help with.
