AISEO Notes
AISEO is not a separate discipline from SEO. It is SEO done with more discipline about structure and more honesty about substance.
The pattern
What usually goes wrong here
Two failures, and they look nothing alike. The first is mechanical: the crawler that feeds the assistant is blocked, at robots.txt or silently at the CDN edge, so the site is not eligible to be cited at all. The second is substantive: the site is perfectly readable and the models still name somebody else, because nothing on it states a clear answer worth lifting. The first takes fifteen minutes to fix. The second is the real work.
What I look at
The things that actually move it
- Crawler access first — GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and the rest, allowed in robots.txt and not blocked at the edge
- Static, server-rendered HTML, because AI crawlers are far less patient than Googlebot about executing JavaScript
- The answer stated plainly in the first 150 words of a page, in the shape an assistant can quote without editing
- Structured data that matches the visible page, so the entity and its facts are unambiguous
- FAQ answers present in the DOM even when visually collapsed, which rules out JavaScript-injected accordions
- Third-party citations — assistants weigh what other sites say about you more heavily than what you say about yourself
- An llms.txt stating who you are, what you do and which pages matter
- Prompt testing as the measurement: ask the eight questions a buyer would ask and write down who gets named instead of you
FAQ
AISEO — questions I get asked
What is AISEO?
AISEO is optimising a site to be found, read and cited by AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude — rather than only by traditional search engines. It is also called GEO, or generative engine optimisation. The practices overlap heavily with SEO; what changes is that being quoted matters more than being ranked.
How do you get ChatGPT to mention your business?
Start by confirming you are eligible: allow OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot in robots.txt, and check nothing is blocking them at your CDN edge. Then give the models something worth quoting — a page that states the answer plainly and early — and build third-party citations, because assistants weigh what other sites say about you more than what you say about yourself.
Is AISEO a separate workstream from SEO?
For most companies, no, and treating it as one wastes budget. The technical foundation, the clear on-page answers and the off-page credibility are the same work. Run it as SEO with the structure and substance tightened, and add prompt testing to how you measure it.
How do you measure AISEO?
Ranking positions do not apply, so measure by prompt. Write the questions a buyer would actually ask an assistant, run them, and record who gets named. Do it monthly. It is the most honest competitive research available right now, and it costs nothing but the time.

Allowing GPTBot is not what makes ChatGPT cite you. Here is the crawler that does, how to test whether you are being quoted, and what to fix this week.

SEO
Most sites do not have an SEO problem. They have three at once, and fixing one without the other two is why the work appears to stall.
